Nagpur - Blue Print for India

In Nagpur, Maharashtra, an integrated municipal waste-to-CBG facility is demonstrating how municipal solid waste can be converted into renewable compressed biogas, organic fertiliser and recoverable materials at industrial scale.

12

Hectares

The 12-hectare site combines sorting, fermentation, gas upgrading and composting in one integrated facility.

1200

Tonnes of MSW / day

The Nagpur facility sorts 1,200 tonnes of waste daily. Organics are turned into biomethane and compost in fermentation tunnels.

30

Fermentation tunnels

Thirty sealed fermentation tunnels process the organic waste in batches, producing biogas around the clock.

55

Tonnes of GBG / day (design)

Biogas is upgraded to 99% pure methane and compressed as CBG. The captured CO2 is reused, for example in concrete.

Our solution

Developed through cooperation between Indian project stakeholders and Dutch technology and engineering partners, the Bhandewadi facility combines mechanical waste segregation, dry anaerobic digestion, biogas upgrading and resource recovery within one integrated operation.

Key benefits

Elevating Communities: Zero Landfill, New Opportunities, and More! Our blueprint project brings an array of benefits to the community: nihil landfilling, job creation, and the production of biogas, premium compost, and recyclables. And NMC incurs no initial investment, but instead receives annual royalties.

Experience the facility

‍

Explore the complete process: from receiving municipal solid waste and recovering the organic fraction to producing renewable gas and see how phased commissioning enables gas production while remaining sections are being completed.

Project overview

The Bhandewadi facility operates under a long-term concession framework with Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). It is designed to process up to 1,200 tonnes of mixed municipal solid waste daily, integrating sorting, anaerobic digestion, renewable gas production and the recovery of secondary materials.

Nagpur illustrates SusBDe's integrated project concept and how it can be delivered through dedicated local project execution, international engineering, specialist technology partners and arrangements for insurance and carbon credits.

‍

From waste to valuable resources

  1. ‍Waste segregation:  mechanical sorting, conveyors and rotary screens separate organic material from recyclable and other recoverable fractions.‍
  2. Dry fermentation:  organic material is processed in sealed concrete batch-fermentation tunnels where it generates biogas.‍
  3. Gas upgrading: the resulting gas is treated and upgraded to renewable biomethane, then compressed for CBG transport and distribution.‍
  4. ‍Composting and resource recovery: digestate is further treated to produce organic fertiliser, alongside recovery of other useful materials.‍
  5. Plant safety and infrastructure: firewater systems, gas-handling equipment, utilities and process monitoring support the facility’s industrial operations.

An integrated delivery model

The Nagpur project brings together a long-term municipal framework, an Indian project promoter and operator, engineering inputs from the Netherlands and India, specialised treatment technology, and arrangements for insurance and carbon credit development.

Structural and engineering contributions include Geelhoed Engineering in the Netherlands and PRIVIJ Consultants Engineering in India. This combination of international know-how and Indian engineering and execution capacity is integral to a replicable project approach.

A blueprint for future projects

Nagpur represents more than a single renewable energy facility. Its phased development illustrates how large-scale waste-to-resource projects can progress from project design and commissioning to commercial production while retaining a repeatable integrated structure.

The experience gained provides a reference for further municipal waste-to-CBG developments in India and for potential application in other international markets.
