From Vision to Reality: Five Years of Building a Landmark Biomethane Project in India

July 10, 2026

What began as a vision in 2021 has become one of India's leading municipal waste-to-biomethane projects. The Nagpur project demonstrates how perseverance, international collaboration and innovative technology can transform ambitious ideas into reality. As the project moves towards completion, it not only marks a major milestone for SusBDe and its partners, but also establishes a blueprint for the next generation of circular economy projects across India.

Nagpur, India – July 2026 The recent progress at the Nagpur Municipal Solid Waste-to-Biomethane project marks far more than another construction milestone. It represents the successful outcome of a journey that began in 2021, when SusBDe started developing one of India's most ambitious circular economy projects together with its Indian partners.

After years of technical development, stakeholder engagement, engineering, regulatory procedures and international cooperation, the concession agreement with Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) was signed in 2023 by Jaap Veenenbos, Group CEO of SusBDe. That moment marked the transition from vision to implementation.

Today, seeing the project progressing towards completion is a testament to the perseverance and commitment of everyone involved.

International cooperation

The Nagpur project demonstrates how international collaboration can accelerate the transition towards sustainable waste management and renewable energy.

SusBDe gratefully acknowledges the support received throughout the development process from the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Mumbai. Special appreciation goes to Bart de Jong, former Consul General, together with Priya Anil, as well as their successors Nabil Taouati and Kaustubh Parihar, whose continued commitment has strengthened Indo-Dutch cooperation over the years.

SusBDe also expresses its appreciation to Hon. Minister Nitin Gadkari, whose vision for sustainable infrastructure and circular economy initiatives continues to inspire innovative projects throughout India.

A Blueprint for Future Projects

The Nagpur facility is much more than a single biomethane plant.

It serves as a blueprint for future municipal waste-to-biomethane developments that will be developed through Keva SusBDe Biotech Pvt. Ltd., SusBDe's dedicated development company for India. The experience gained in Nagpur forms the foundation for a growing portfolio of circular economy projects across the country.

This achievement would not have been possible without the commitment of our Indian colleagues and the contribution of our technology and engineering partners, including Waste Treatment Technologies (WTT), MFE, Geelhoed Engineering, and many others who have contributed over the past five years.

As SusBDe, we are proud of what has been accomplished together—and convinced that this is only the beginning.
