Maharagama, Sri Lanka – Following its recent engagement with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, SusBDe has continued to strengthen its presence in Sri Lanka through constructive discussions with the Maharagama Urban Council, one of the country's important local authorities responsible for municipal waste management.
During the meeting, Dr. Prasanna Gunawardena, Director of SusBDe Biotech Lanka Ltd., presented SusBDe's integrated Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) to Compressed Biogas (CBG) solution to members of the Council and its technical representatives.
Using practical project examples and SusBDe's proven development approach, Dr. Gunawardena explained how municipal waste can be transformed into valuable renewable resources. The presentation demonstrated how the proposed solution can significantly reduce landfill dependency, lower greenhouse gas emissions, produce renewable biomethane, generate high-quality organic fertiliser, and create sustainable local employment opportunities through a circular economy model.
The Maharagama Urban Council currently manages approximately 200 tonnes of Municipal Solid Waste per day, making the municipality an excellent candidate for implementing an integrated waste-to-energy solution.
The Council responded positively to the presentation and expressed strong interest in the opportunities offered by SusBDe's technology. The Mayor confirmed that the proposal will be submitted to the next Council meeting with the objective of obtaining formal approval to proceed with the preparation and signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SusBDe.
This represents another important milestone in SusBDe's commitment to supporting Sri Lanka's transition towards sustainable waste management and renewable energy infrastructure.
SusBDe looks forward to continuing its collaboration with the Maharagama Urban Council and all relevant stakeholders to develop innovative projects that deliver long-term environmental, social and economic benefits for local communities.

What began as a vision in 2021 has become one of India's leading municipal waste-to-biomethane projects.
